Costa Rica is a country in Central America, well known for its lush flora and fauna, home of 4% of the world’s biodiversity. Its small territory offers wonderful landscapes, rivers of clear waters and lagoons, beautiful beaches, green mountains, humble and cheerful people and a very diverse culture framed by the phrase Pura Vida! It’s used by everybody in any daily conversation. Costa Ricans (Ticos) use this term to say hello, goodbye, to express that everything is going well and when they like something.
It is not only words that reflect the true meaning of Pura Vida! It is a way of life for Ticos. Not surprisingly, Costa Rica has been named as one of the happiest countries in the world. The Ticos lead a relaxed life and a simple way of seeing life. No worries or stress.
The expression is so intrinsically linked to the Costa Rican language and culture, that it constitutes a “community-group brand” that transcends borders and shows the particular way of Costa Ricans to see the world.
On the other hand, the popular “tico” comes from the widespread custom among Costa Ricans of using the suffix “ico” or “ica” as diminutive when speaking.
