Costa Rica Surfing

With miles of coastline in the Pacific and the Atlantic, it’s no wonder why is surfing such a  popular sport in Costa Rica, and that a never ending search for the perfect wave, draws enthusiasts surfers all over the world. Whether looking east or west, north or south breaks, Costa Rica’s perfect blends of geography and wind have created prime conditions to satisfy every taste. Costa Rican beaches had become one of the most popular surf spots in the central Pacific area. Costa Rica is the perfect place to spend vacations: relax, enjoy nature and do what you do best, surf!

Most surfing areas offer everything youl need to spend an incredible time, board rentals are available, as well as a wide range of accommodations and activities for when the sun goes down. Costa Rica’s diversity and tremendous variety of surf spots make it possible to surf excellent waves all year long. Some of these spots are:

Playa Tamarindo

Playa Tamarindo is one of the top surfing destinations in Costa Rica for both beginners and experienced surfers. There are several breaks, including a river-mouth break that can be world-class with the right swell direction and size. 

Witch’s Rock

Witch’s Rock, or Roca Bruja, is a world-famous surf break in the Santa Rosa National Park in Guanacaste. This one is recommended for experimented surfers, and it is only accessible via boat or a very treacherous drive.With the right swell direction, size, and wind conditions, Witch’s Rock throws perfect barrels.

Playa Guiones

Playa Guiones is the main beach in Nosara, a yoga and surf hotspot. There are several peaks and different sections that offer waves suitable for beginners and experienced surfers.

Playa Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is another popular surf destination in Costa Rica. This laid-back surf town is located on the Nicoya Peninsula and picks up most swells. There are several different breaks and spots for all different levels of surfers.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa (near Jaco) is a well-known surf spot. Unless the swell is small, this is not a great spot for beginners. The waves are typically pretty heavy and powerful. This is a spot where you can score an epic barrel.
