TRIP DETAILS

Experience the Rio Celeste hike, one of Costa Rica’s most breathtaking adventures, where the rainforest hides a surreal blue waterfall deep inside Tenorio Volcano National Park.
This isn’t just a nature walk—it’s a journey through lush jungle, where two rivers merge and create the magical color that gives Río Celeste its name. With every step, you’ll feel more connected to the land, the sounds, and the stories that make this place unforgettable.

This moderate hike takes you through dense jungle trails alive with birdsong, exotic wildlife, and rich biodiversity. You’ll pass bubbling thermal springs, cross rustic bridges, and descend to a viewing platform that reveals the spectacular Catarata Río Celeste—a turquoise cascade that looks almost too blue to be real. Along the way, you’ll also visit Los Teñideros, the exact point where two mineral-rich rivers merge to create the magical blue hue.

The full trail is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) round trip and takes 3 to 4 hours to complete. While it can be muddy in rainy season, it’s well-maintained and manageable for most travelers in good health.

The Rio Celeste waterfall hike isn’t just a walk in the woods—it’s a memory you’ll carry long after the mud has washed off your boots.
