Caño Negro and Río Frío Boat Tour from La Fortuna

Approx. 7 hours

North Zone

TRIP DETAILS

Located on the Rio Frío near Nicaragua, this biologically humid area is considered to be one of Costa Rica’s richest in biologically diverse areas. A great variety of resident and migratory birds plus three different species of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, turtles, and caimans may be seen here. The tour starts with “Nature Lovers” who are picked up from their hotels in a very comfortable bus for the 1-½ hour transfer to Los Chiles, a culturally mixed village only 4-km from the Nicaraguan border.

Once you arrive, your boat will be ready to take you on your 2 ½ hour river safari adventure. Your captain will steer through lush, tropical rainforest and green pastures until you arrive at the marsh, as your experienced bilingual guide leads the tour. During the tour, you will be offered soft drinks, natural juices, bottled water, and cookies included during the boat tour. Hundreds of migratory and resident bird species can be sighted on the Caño Negro, and they are especially easy to discover during the dry season.

Among the birds you are likely to see are the Anhinga (Snake-bird), Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Storks, Olivaceous Cormorant, and the highly endangered Jabiru, the largest bird in Central America. Along the river, you may also see howler monkeys, spider monkeys, white-faced monkeys, the three-toed sloth, caiman, Jesus Christ lizards, and turtles. After the tour, you will enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch, regional fruit, natural juices, and coffee served at the Restaurant Río Frío.

A tour is full of nature, diversity, and adventure you need to experience.
